Sophie Lou Jacobsen

Sophie Lou Jacobsen is a French-born, New York City based designer. With a keen focus on the emotional aspect of objects, she creates objects for the home that blur the boundaries between functional objects and decorative art. Sophie believes that objects possess an innate energy that can have a strong effect on our lives. In this light, she aims to imbue a certain poetry in her creations in order to enhance daily rituals, or to create moments of pause and reflection.

By creating an emotional response, she believes we can create a relationship of mutual respect between objects and humans, based on attention, thoughtfulness and care. Referencing historical artefacts and design objects, Sophie turns an eye to the past in order to understand each objectʼs sociological and environmental context. She looks to masters in her field, such as Sottsass, Scarpa and Hoffman (amongst many others) as sources of inspiration, as well as traditional craftsmanship, but is dedicated to creating something new and unique, and distinctly personal, with every new creation.

Often working collaboratively, her work explores themes such as joy, delight, reverie, transience and contemplation. They are both postmodern and romantic in equal measure, playful yet sophisticated, minimal but expressive. Working closely with New York based master glassblowers, Sophieʼs collectible and lighting pieces are produced locally and made to order. Her relationship with her production partners allow her to be endlessly deepening her knowledge of the material at hand, in order to push its boundaries and create new design languages for her collections. Exploring object relations from lighting to statement vases, the world of Sophie Lou Jacobsen is complete all the way down to the very last coaster, and will transport you and your clients to another time, not future nor past, always in the moment but with plenty of space to dream and wander.
