The Mesozoic series is the result of the studio’s ongoing exploration in paleobotany, an ode to the ancient flora and fauna that came before us. These dream-like botanical expressions represent memorialization, stewardship and discovery. The work is compromised of a variety of stoneware clay bodies. The textural elements in the piece are the up-cycled byproduct from carving our sculptural work and collected over the years, adding depth and textural richness that can only be achieved by having had created work before it. The ancient pisé method is used to compact recycled clay over the design in 1" deep frames, resulting in a dense stoneware slab. The slabs are fired, glazed, and accented with crushed glass. The finished components are adhered to a white birch skeletal table frame and completed with grout.
